While providing physical support and guidance to the user, it is intended that PAMM would also monitor the userís vital signs, providing an indication of the personís health. Implementing a health monitoring system into PAMM allows for continuous monitoring, yielding medical professionals with a more complete picture of a personís health and allows for the userís vital signs to be correlated with their daily activities.
To determine what quantities to measure, a comprehensive assessment was conducted of the usersí needs. Medical personal that interact with the elderly on a daily basis were contacted. It was decided that PAMM would monitor the userís pulse, hydration status and gait. The sensor hardware necessary to record these signals has been developed and is currently being implemented onto the walker.
